Positive thinking can play a very important role in your weight loss journey, but perhaps not in the way that you would assume. When you have a more positive attitude to weight loss you’re more likely to celebrate the small wins, and feel like you are making progress with each positive action that you take. This feeling can result in increased energy, and higher motivation levels.

This can in turn make it easier for you to making better decisions when it comes to food and exercise. On the other hand having a negative attitude can make you feel that every small setback of slip up in just further proof of your inability to lose weight. The less confidence you have in yourself, the more you berate yourself, the lower your chances of achieving your weight loss goals.

How to Overcome Negative Thoughts

Learning to recognize when you’re having these negative emotions is key to stop them dead in their tracks. Acknowledge the thoughts that you’re having and take a deep breath, come back to your reason for starting this weight loss journey in the first place and focus on that. Let your reason motivate you to move past the negative thought and turn it into something positive, it may even help you achieve your weight loss goals faster.

Setting a Manageable Goal

Often people set themselves up for failure by setting an unattainable goal like surviving on too little calories per day and setting a weight loss goal that’s not realistic. When they inevitably fail a cycle of negative self-talk starts, and can leave you feeling deflated and unmotivated.

To ensure you stay on track with your weight loss journey, and keep in that positive frame of mind, try setting yourself small achievable goals and then acknowledge your success when you achieve that goal. Whether it be you lost 1kg that week, or you went for a 20 minute walk every day! Any positive action deserves recognition, and the more positive thoughts you have in the process of your weight loss, the more likely you can continue your plan long term.

Consistent, moderate weight loss that you are able to keep off in the long run is far better than fast weight loss that gets regained… usually plus some. It’s not a race, it’s your life, and it’s possible to lose weight and actually enjoy the process… isn’t that worth a shot?
