Cellulite

It’s something a lot of us are self conscious about, and makes us want to cover ourselves up. The good news is that there are some things you can do to reduce the appearance of cellulite, and feel more confident in your own skin!


Do HIIT

High intensity interval training (HIIT) is the type of exercise where you do short bursts or high intensity exercise, followed by short rest breaks. Things like circuits are a good example. What is high intensity for one person may not be the same for someone else, so base this on your body- are you feeling like you are exerting yourself as much as you could in your exercise burst? Perfect!

As always, with any higher intensity exercises you want to get clearance from your doctor first, and wearing a heart rate monitor is a good idea as well. The point is that you safely burn as many calories as you can in one exercise session, which helps create a calorie deficit to promote weight loss, thereby reducing overall body fat and with it- the appearance of cellulite!


Tone up your muscles

Doing resistance exercises (weight bearing exercises) three times a week, with at least a 48 hour gap in between sessions, will give you strong muscles that help increase your metabolism over a 24 hour period…

Higher metabolism means you burn more energy in a day, aiding with weight loss, and you guessed it- reducing the appearance of cellulite.


Get your diet right

High sugar, high GI carbohydrate foods cause insulin spikes, which can contribute to increased abdominal fat stores- so if cellulite around your midsection is a concern for you, look into swapping to moderate amounts of low GI carbohydrates like wholegrain breads, cereals, crackers, and wraps.

And of course, an overall healthy and calorie controlled diet plan is important for losing body fat. Think lots of vegetables, fruit, and whole grains, with moderate amounts of lean protein, low fat dairy, and healthy fats.


Stop smoking

Studies have shown that smoking weakens collagen, a part of the connective tissue in your skin, and weak collagen = more visible cellulite. Also make sure you are hydrated, for hydrated skin which also helps decrease cellulite visibility.
